How do you add some new excitement to one of the greatest fighting franchises ever?

Aside from the fact that they're revamping the fighting system from the ground up, updating the graphics and animation to make it stunning on the Xbox 360 and the PS3, they've decided to pit the Mortal Kombat universe against some of the greats (both hero AND villain) from the DC universe.
